When our return client purchased her new duplex, we set out to solve the client's needs for an additional bedroom and maximized light.  The duplex had odd ceiling heights, an eccentric layout, and an outdated kitchen/bathroom, but did have natural light from a series of skylights.  We unified the space with an open, cohesive plan built around maximizing the outpouring of light while preserving privacy.  Accommodating our client's request for more privacy in the sleeping spaces, we rejected a light-blocking plaster wall in favor of creating a unique floor-to-ceiling bookcase-wall with laminated glass and rice paper back-panels so that light is emitted while vision is filtered.  We wholly recreated her kitchen and bathroom to incorporate modern fixtures and fittings next to soft off-white hues and finishes.  By integrating her existing rough-hewn furnishings with her collection of Asian art, we preserved the high/low aspect we achieved in our first project together while keeping the overall feeling of the space comfortable and approachable.
